With the unveiling of the new Enamel Watch, Tiffany & Co. revisits one of the most emblematic creations of Schlumberger’s career — the Croisillon bracelet — and translates it into a luminous horological jewel. The result is not only a watch, but a moving canvas of light, enamel, and diamonds, produced in limited quantities and steeped in the Maison’s historic mastery of decorative arts .

A Dialogue Between Jewellery and Time

The Enamel Watch draws direct inspiration from the Croisillon bracelets designed by Jean Schlumberger in 1962. Instantly recognisable for their cross-stitch motif in yellow gold over richly coloured paillonné enamel, these bracelets became icons of 20th-century jewellery design — often worn stacked, bold and joyful on the wrist .

Now, that same motif becomes the architecture of time.

The 36 mm case, available in 18k yellow or white gold, frames a two-level dial. At its centre, a fixed snow-set pavé of diamonds creates a near-continuous field of brilliance. Surrounding it, a rotating outer ring reinterprets the Croisillon bracelet in miniature: twelve cross motifs mark the hours, but unlike traditional indices, they move freely with the motion of the wrist, generating a refined and playful visual choreography — a subtle tribute to Schlumberger’s sophisticated sense of design .

In contrast to the diamond-set dial, the yellow gold hands echo the warmth of the cross motifs, reinforcing the graphic rhythm of the piece.

The Art of Paillonné Enamel — A Nearly Lost Craft

At the heart of this creation lies paillonné enamel, a technique born in the 19th century and nearly forgotten by the mid-20th century before Schlumberger revived it for high jewellery .

The process demands exceptional dexterity and artistic sensitivity. Finely cut fragments of 18k gold or silver leaf are applied to the surface. Layers of translucent coloured enamel follow, each fired at high temperature. The sequence — metal leaf, enamel, kiln — is repeated multiple times to achieve depth, intensity, and extraordinary luminosity .

For each Tiffany Blue® enamel ring, the three-phase paillonné process is repeated up to three times. The creation of a single rotating ring requires 65 hours of work — 55 dedicated to enamelling alone, and 10 to crafting and assembling the gold cross motifs . Thus the paillonné enamel becomes a true architectural element.

A Legacy Rooted in Decorative Arts

Tiffany’s relationship with enamel dates back to the 1870s, when the Maison first presented in-house enamel creations at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878. Over decades, Tiffany artisans mastered cloisonné, flinqué and grisaille techniques, applying them to vases, brooches, chatelaine watches and Art Déco table clocks.

Among the historical treasures preserved in the Tiffany Archives are enamelled chatelaine and pendant watches from the late 19th century, the celebrated 1889 Apple Blossom watch, and Art Déco desk clocks from the 1920s.

The Enamel Watch therefore does not introduce enamel into Tiffany’s watchmaking vocabulary — it reaffirms it.

The brilliance of the enamel is intensified by extraordinary gem-setting. The case and central dial are snow-set with brilliant-cut diamonds of varying sizes, minimising visible metal and creating a shimmering surface of light.

The central dial alone holds 204 diamonds, while the case is set with 366 more, totalling over 4 carats in the standard version. The T-shaped buckle adds a further 43 diamonds.

Even the caseback is conceived as a jewel: engraved with a radiating motif inspired by Schlumberger’s Floral Arrows brooch and adorned with 14 diamonds.
