After an extraordinary public and philanthropic effort, the British Museum has successfully raised £3.5 million to acquire the Tudor Heart Pendant — a rare and deeply symbolic jewel believed to be connected to the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Once at risk of disappearing into a private collection, the pendant has now been secured for the nation — and for future generations.

The survival of jewellery from the Tudor court is, in itself, a small miracle. Objects of personal adornment from early-sixteenth-century England were worn, altered, melted down, or lost to time, leaving behind only fragments of a world where jewels spoke the language of power, loyalty, and love.
That is why the recent announcement from the British Museum resonates far beyond the museum world.

A Jewel Born of Dynasty and Devotion

Discovered in 2019 in a field in Warwickshire by a metal detectorist, the Tudor Heart Pendant dates to around 1518, at a moment when Henry VIII was still the golden prince of the Renaissance court, and his marriage to Catherine of Aragon symbolised political stability and dynastic promise.

Fashioned in solid 24-carat gold, the pendant takes the form of a heart — a shape that, in the Tudor period, conveyed not sentimental romance but allegiance, continuity, and permanence. Its surface is richly decorated with enamelled symbols that speak with unmistakable clarity.

The Tudor rose, emblem of the ruling dynasty, appears alongside the pomegranate, Catherine of Aragon’s personal badge, inherited from her Spanish lineage. Binding them together is a short yet powerful inscription in Old French: tousiorsalways.
It is a declaration of unity, intended not for public ceremony but for intimate display: a jewel worn close to the body, carrying political meaning through personal symbolism.

As Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the British Museum, reflected on the discovery and its significance:

“This is a jewel that speaks across the centuries. It conveys a message about relationships, alliances, and the very means by which royalty articulated its power. Saving this object for the nation ensures that such stories remain accessible to all.”

Jewellery as Royal Language

What makes the Tudor Heart Pendant so exceptional is not only its rarity, but its clarity of intent. This is jewellery as communication — a visual manifesto rendered in gold.

In the early sixteenth century, court jewels functioned as portable statements of identity and loyalty. They were diplomatic tools, marriage tokens, and expressions of dynastic ideology. Few surviving examples allow us to read this language so directly, with both iconography and inscription preserved.

The pendant offers a rare glimpse into a moment before history fractured the Tudor narrative — before divorce, religious upheaval, and execution would redefine Henry VIII’s reign. Seen through this jewel, the Tudor court appears poised, hopeful, and resolutely united.

Museum curators have described the pendant not simply as an artefact, but as a “gesture of commitment at the heart of the Tudor dynastic story — created at a pivotal point in English history.”

A Collective Effort to Preserve History

The acquisition was made possible through an exceptional fundraising campaign launched in 2025, drawing support from major heritage institutions and the public alike. Contributions included significant grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, and private trusts, alongside donations from more than 45,000 individuals.

In the words of Art Fund’s Director of Grants:

“This campaign has shown what can be achieved when institutions and the public come together to protect a priceless piece of cultural heritage. It is a testament to the universal appeal of this remarkable object.”

This collective response speaks to the enduring power of jewellery to capture the imagination — not merely as an object of beauty, but as a bearer of memory and meaning. The Tudor Heart Pendant resonated because it tells a human story, rendered in precious materials.

A Jewel Returned to the Public Eye

With the acquisition complete, the Tudor Heart Pendant will enter the British Museum’s permanent collection and is expected to feature in future displays dedicated to Tudor England and Renaissance craftsmanship. Plans also include a regional tour, returning the jewel — briefly — to the landscape where it lay hidden for centuries.

Dr Cullinan concluded with gratitude and a sense of purpose:

“Securing the Tudor Heart has been a collaborative endeavour, and it underscores our commitment to ensuring that objects of historical and artistic importance remain in the public domain.”

In saving this jewel, the British Museum has done more than acquire an object. It has preserved a chapter of jewellery history where gold, enamel, and inscription converge to tell a story of power, partnership, and promise.

For those who believe that high jewellery is never merely decorative, but always narrative, the Tudor Heart Pendant is a reminder of why these objects still matter — and why they must be protected.
