On 11 November 2025, Christie’s will offer in Geneva one of the most extraordinary gems to appear on the auction market in recent years: The Mellon Blue, a 9.51-carat Fancy Vivid Blue, Internally Flawless, pear-shaped diamond once belonging to the iconic American horticulturalist and philanthropist Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. Estimated at US$20–30 million, the stone will lead Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues.

An Exceptional Gemstone

Blue diamonds are among the rarest treasures of nature, celebrated for their mesmerising hues and extreme scarcity. Graded Fancy Vivid Blue—the most coveted saturation category by the Gemological Institute of America—the Mellon Blue combines richly saturated colour with flawless clarity, an attribute that magnifies both its brilliance and rarity. Its perfectly symmetrical pear-shaped cut further enhances its fire and balance, making it one of the most important blue diamonds ever to appear at auction.

Provenance: The Taste of Bunny Mellon

Beyond its gemmological importance, the Mellon Blue carries the aura of Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon (1910–2014), renowned as the “American Garden Queen.” Her refined, understated elegance shaped everything from her garden designs—including the White House Rose Garden, redesigned at President John F. Kennedy’s request—to her discreet yet impeccable jewellery collection. Mellon once remarked that “nothing should be noticed,” a philosophy that, though expressed in the context of garden design, encapsulated her discreet approach to life and collecting.

For decades, the diamond—then set as a pendant—was part of Mellon’s collection. Recently mounted as a ring, it has been reimagined for contemporary wear while retaining its historical identity. The Mellon Blue was last seen publicly in 2014, when it appeared at auction at Sotheby’s in New York and achieved one of the highest prices ever paid for a coloured diamond.

A Market Moment

Coloured diamonds—particularly blues—have consistently commanded record-breaking results at auction. From the legendary Oppenheimer Blue to the Wittelsbach-Graff, Christie’s has long set the stage for these rarities to achieve historic prices.

In the first half of 2025 alone, Christie’s sold nine of the top ten jewels at auction worldwide, with jewellery sales up 25% year on year and two various-owner live auctions achieving 100% sold in both New York and Geneva.

Against this backdrop, the Mellon Blue emerges as a landmark jewel, uniting extraordinary gemmological credentials with the prestige of a storied provenance.

Interview with Rahul Kadakia

To explore the significance of The Mellon Blue within today’s jewellery market, High Jewellery Dream spoke with Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewellery.

HJD: The Mellon Blue is positioned as one of the finest coloured diamonds to appear on the market. In your view, what distinguishes this 9.51 ct Fancy Vivid Blue, Internally Flawless stone in today’s landscape of exceptional gems?
RK: The Mellon Blue, a 9.51-carat Fancy Vivid Blue, Internally Flawless pear-shaped diamond, is exceptionally rare, as vivid blue diamonds with IF clarity above 5 carats are almost never seen at public auction, with only a handful recorded. Its perfectly symmetrical shape and richly saturated blue hue deliver remarkable brilliance, making it one of the most important blue diamonds ever offered, rivaling landmarks like the Oppenheimer Blue and commanding top value in 2025’s scarce colored diamond market.

HJD: In terms of provenance: how does Bunny Mellon’s legacy and refined taste enhance the allure and cultural significance of this diamond for collectors?
RK: Bunny Mellon’s legacy as a tastemaker, known for designing the White House Rose Garden and curating exceptional art and jewelry, elevates the Mellon Blue’s allure by tying it to her sophisticated aesthetic and cultural prominence. Clients are constantly looking for prestigious provenance, making the diamond a coveted piece of American history that will appeal to collectors worldwide.

HJD: How do you see The Mellon Blue in relation to past landmark blue diamonds offered at Christie’s, in terms of rarity, colour saturation and current market expectations?
RK: The Mellon Blue’s 9.51-carat Fancy Vivid Blue, Internally Flawless quality is in line with the most exceptional gems we have sold at Christie’s. Its rarity matches the saturation of the Oppenheimer Blue (2016), although the clarity is slightly better being Internally Flawless. Strong demand for colored diamonds alongside the provenance should lead to a very strong result at the sale.

HJD: The diamond was once worn as a pendant and is now set as a ring—how does the current mounting shape its contemporary appeal versus its identity as a standalone gem?
RK: Set as a ring, the Mellon Blue gives a contemporary feel that is easily wearable for the eventual buyer. Should the ring not be to the buyers taste, Christie’s will have it remounted in a style that suits the client’s wishes.

So far Christie’s has not specified if the setting is by JAR. My guess is this is not by JAR otherwise the press release would have said it.
