A gallery of favourite pieces from the Important Jewels auction which took place today, October 22, at Christie’s New York.
Let us begin with some majestic (partly because of their estimates) pieces:
AN IMPRESSIVE DIAMOND PENDANT NECKLACE. Suspending a cushion-cut diamond, weighing approximately 101.36 carats, to the black silk cord neckchain with pavé-set diamond terminals, mounted in platinum, 17 ins. Estimate $4,250,000 – $6,250,000.
A MAGNIFICENT DIAMOND PENDANT NECKLACE. Suspending a detachable pendant, set with three rectangular-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 81.38, 15.30 and 7.04 carats, spaced by circular-cut diamonds, to the neckchain designed as a line of seventeen circular-cut diamonds, the largest weighing approximately 15.46 carats, spaced by rectangular and square-cut diamonds, mounted in 18k white gold, 18 ins. Estimate $2,800,000 – $3,500,000.
A DIAMOND RING. Set with a rectangular-cut diamond, weighing approximately 23.89 carats, flanked on either side by a tapered baguette-cut diamond, mounted in platinum. Estimate $900,000 – $1,200,000.
A COLORED DIAMOND RING. Set with a modified pear-shaped fancy intense green diamond, weighing approximately 3.51 carats, flanked on either side by a pear-shaped diamond, mounted in platinum. Estimate $800,000 – $1,200,000.
A COLORED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND RING. Set with a pear-shaped fancy brownish yellow diamond, weighing approximately 16.01 carats and measuring 24.66 x 14.58 x 7.77 mm, to the circular-cut diamond gallery and half-hoop, mounted in 18k gold. Estimate $300,000 – $500,000.
A COLORED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND RING. Set with a modified square-cut fancy intense yellowish green diamond, weighing approximately 5.18 carats, within a heart-shaped and oval-cut diamond surround, trimmed with circular-cut pink diamonds, to the circular-cut diamond gallery and half-hoop, mounted in 18k rose and white gold. Estimate $300,000 – $500,000.
A COLORED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND NECKLACE, BY HOUSE OF TAYLOR. Suspending a detachable pendant, set with a modified pear-shaped fancy yellow diamond, weighing approximately 8.30 carats, from a modified pear-shaped diamond, weighing approximately 4.01 carats, to the neckchain, set with a modified pear-shaped fancy intense yellow diamond, weighing approximately 3.05 carats, to the line of pear-shaped diamonds and yellow diamonds, mounted in 18k white and yellow gold, 15 ins. Neckchain signed Elizabeth for House of Taylor. Estimate $280,000 – $350,000.
And now let us continue with pieces which, although their “lower” estimate, just captured my heart (the flowery motif is a leading one this time):
A DIAMOND AND RUBY FLOWER BROOCH, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS.
Designed as a circular-cut diamond and ruby flower, to the circular-cut diamond leaf, with gold wirework detail, mounted in white and yellow gold, with maker’s marks. Estimate: $20,000 – $30,000.
A MULTI-COLORED SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH.
Designed as two cushion-cut yellow and blue sapphire flowers, with circular-cut diamond detail, the sculpted platinum stems gathered with a cushion-cut orange sapphire, mounted in platinum. Estimate $10,000 – $15,000.
A SAPPHIRE, EMERALD AND DIAMOND FLOWER PENDANT BROOCH, BY CARTIER.
Centering upon a cabochon sapphire pistil, extending circular-cut emerald stamen, to the circular-cut diamond sculpted petals, mounted in platinum and 18k gold
Signed Cartier, no. 10942. Estimate $12,000 – $18,000.
A RUBY, PINK SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND FLOWER NECKLACE.
Designed as a circular-cut diamond line, set with oval-cut ruby and pink sapphire flower blossoms centering upon circular-cut diamond pistils, enhanced with variously shaped rose-cut diamond leaves, mounted in platinum. Estimate $70,000 – $100,000.
AN ART DECO JADE, DIAMOND, SAPPHIRE AND ROCK CRYSTAL BROOCH, BY CARTIER.
Designed as a half-moon shaped carved jade plaque, set with cabochon sapphires, trimmed with Old European, circular and single-cut diamonds, suspending an articulated carved rock crystal hoop, mounted in platinum, circa 1925. Signed Cartier. Estimate $30,000 – $50,000.
AN ART DECO COLORED DIAMOND, DIAMOND, RUBY AND ONYX RING.
Set with a circular-cut fancy light to fancy brownish greenish yellow diamond, with cabochon ruby and onyx detail, to the circular and single-cut diamond lozenge-shaped surround, mounted in platinum, circa 1920. Estimate $12,000 – $15,000.
A DIAMOND, EMERALD AND GOLD LEAF BROOCH.
Designed as three circular-cut diamond leaves, each with sculpted gold detail, centering upon a pear-shaped diamond and calibré-cut emerald bud, to the baguette-cut diamond stem, mounted in platinum and gold. Estimate $10,000 – $15,000.
A RETRO AQUAMARINE AND GOLD “LUDO HEXAGONE” BRACELET WATCH, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS. Designed as a flexible mosaic of honeycomb links, each with aquamarine accents, to the rectangular-cut aquamarine and sculpted gold buckle clasp, opening to reveal a watch, with mechanical movement, the rectangular dial with Arabic numerals and blued steel hands, mounted in gold, circa 1940, 5¾ ins., in a Van Cleef & Arpels green suede box. Estimate: $40,000 – $60,000.

Of bombé design, set with circular-cut diamonds and two rows of rectangular-cut green tourmalines of crossover design, opening to reveal a watch, with mechanical movement, the circular dial with blued steel hands, mounted in white and yellow gold. Estimate $8,000 – $12,000.
A BELLE ÉPOQUE BLACK OPAL AND DIAMOND RING.
Set with an oval cabochon black opal within an old European-cut diamond surround and shoulders, mounted in platinum, circa 1915. Estimate $10,000 – $15,000.
A RETRO SMOKY QUARTZ, DIAMOND AND GOLD BANGLE BRACELET.
Set at the top with three rectangular-cut smoky quartzes, spaced by old European and old mine-cut diamond bands, to the pierced gallery and gold hinged bangle, mounted in platinum and gold, circa 1945. Estimate $8,000 – $12,000.
A RETRO SAPPHIRE, YELLOW SAPPHIRE AND RUBY FLOWER BROOCH, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS.
Designed as a bouquet of cushion-cut sapphire and yellow sapphire flower blossoms, centering upon a circular-cut sapphire or ruby pistil, extending circular-cut ruby buds and sculpted 18k gold leaves, mounted in 18k gold, with French assay mark, circa 1945. Estimate $15,000 – $20,000.
AN EMERALD, DIAMOND AND GOLD PENDANT NECKALACE, BY BUCCELLATI.
Suspending a detachable pendant brooch, the bombé plaque set with a rectangular-cut emerald, within a single-cut diamond cluster and sculpted 18k gold surround, trimmed with circular-cut diamonds, from the the surmount, set with a circular-cut emerald, trimmed with single-cut diamonds, to the fine link neckchain, joined by a clasp of similar design, mounted in platinum and 18k gold, 16 3/4 ins., in a Buccellati navy leather box. Estimate $22,000 – $28,000.
