In 2025, the CHANEL Watchmaking Creation Studio celebrates a bold creative intersection: the worlds of beauty and time. For the new Blush capsule collection, Arnaud Chastaingt and his team looked beyond traditional horology to the vibrant, graphic language of makeup — and the cultural impact of Pop Art. At the heart of this concept is the limited-edition BOY·FRIEND “Coco Art”, a timepiece that captures Gabrielle Chanel in an intimate beauty moment, rendered as a wearable work of art.

Gabrielle, Framed in Pop Art

The “Coco Art” watch depicts Mademoiselle Chanel as she gazes into her signature powder compact — but this is no nostalgic vignette. With bold outlines and saturated hues, the dial channels the iconography of Pop Art, echoing the graphic spirit of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. This aesthetic synergy is expressed not only through the vivid pink enamel background but also in the contours of Gabrielle’s silhouette, adorned with her signature accessories: her Verdura white cuffs, cascading pearl necklaces, and a sharply tied bow.

The illustration was brought to life by the artisans of Les Cadraniers de Genève (owned by F.P. Journe), using the highly complex Grand Feu enamel technique. Each dial is hand-brushed with liquid enamel and fired at 800°C in a process that demands perfect control. Even the slightest shift in pigment or oven time alters the final hue — a nod to the unpredictable artistry of makeup itself.

Layers of Craftsmanship

Gabrielle’s portrait on the white gold dial is achieved using 12 individually pad-printed clichés, each corresponding to a colour or motif — from beige skin and blue hair to red nails and touches of white. Some layers use traditional ink, while others incorporate enamel. Each stencil requires two hours of drying between applications at 50°C to set the details with absolute precision. In total, seven colours compose this miniature canvas.

To create the image on the dial of the BOY·FRIEND “COCO ART”, 12 manually applied pad-printing engraved clichés were required.

This extraordinary graphic is framed by a steel case with a matte black coating, chosen to intensify the luminous contrast of the 38 hand-set baguette-cut pink sapphires (approx. 1.58 carats) on the bezel. The sapphires themselves were carefully selected not only for their clarity and cut, but also for their vivid “hot pink” hue — a direct reference to the bold tones of CHANEL lipsticks and the palette of Pop Art. Their sparkle is heightened by the shadowy gleam of the coated case, echoing the lacquered finish of CHANEL Beauty packaging.

Art, Horology, and Responsibility

While expressive and painterly in design, the BOY·FRIEND “Coco Art” remains a feat of high watchmaking. It is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve, and finished with a matte black calfskin strap with satin-effect sheen and polished trims. The crown is set with a black spinel cabochon, completing the monochrome base that lets colour take centre stage.

Importantly, all pink sapphires used in this piece are of natural origin and responsibly sourced in accordance with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) standards — a detail that aligns CHANEL’s artistic integrity with ethical commitment.

A Collector’s Icon, Limited to 20

Measuring 37 x 28.6 mm and water-resistant to 30 meters, the BOY·FRIEND “Coco Art” is a wearable fusion of avant-garde art, CHANEL iconography, and haute horlogerie. Only 20 individually numbered pieces exist, each inscribed with its edition on the caseback.

For collectors and connoisseurs, this is not simply a watch. It is a conversation between time, colour, and character — a piece that dares to “make up” time, not only to tell it.
