Bulgari’s approach to jewellery has always gone beyond convention. Some of its most legendary icons were born from this unique convergence of creative originality and the spirit of innovation.

The same is with Tubogas, the flexible tubular band made of precious metal and obtained without welding. Bulgari today marks its long-awaited return with a capsule collection of lively and colourful jewels.
Bulgari Tubogas: history
To understand what Tubogas has represented in the history of Bulgari, we must take a step back to the 40s. In the 1940s, the Maison began to use this technique to make the supple and enveloping bracelets-watches of its Serpenti line.

Tubogas has shown its versatile and contemporary soul from the beginning. But it is only in the 70s that this industrial-inspired style – whose name derives from gas pipes – becomes an emblem of the modern spirit of Bulgari.

In those years, Tubogas jewellery brought the concept of glamour into everyday life. It responded to the needs of a new generation of women who asked for jewellery to wear from day to night. The introduction of steel in combination with yellow gold made these creations more accessible. It combined a casual chic style with an impactful contrast of colours. In addition, a lengthy research process selected a type of steel that was sufficiently malleable, stainless and suitable for casting.

Bulgari’s quest for distinctive colour effects has also led to the creation of alternations between yellow, pink and white gold bands and multicoloured bracelets. Among these, some genuinely unique designs stand out, including overlapping four or five different bands.
Bulgari Tubogas: 2022 Capsule Collection
Today, Bulgari brings the timeless charm of Tubogas back to the fore with new jewellery creations. These new jewels combine the iconic tubular structure with the cabochon-cut gems – one of the Roman Jeweller’s signatures.

The collection’s protagonist is an 18 kt rose gold necklace. It is animated by the chromatic vivacity of five cabochon-cut coloured stones: amethyst, citrine quartz, peridot, rubellite and blue topaz. Each gem is framed by a sparkling pavé of diamonds, which enhances their unique and exciting nuances. Each gem presents the extraordinary cabochon cut – another stylistic figure of the Roman jeweller – characterized by smooth and voluminous contours.

To achieve the iconic flexibility and elasticity of Tubogas, the central body requires many hours of specialized work by a Bulgari craftsman who wraps two long gold bands around a wooden or copper core, subsequently removed, without welding. Completed by a cloison coulissant, a closure system that allows it to adapt perfectly to the neck, the necklace expresses its versatile spirit through every detail.
The capsule also includes three rose gold bracelets, to be combined with the necklace or mixed and matched at will, and available in different colour variations: one with a rubellite fancy cabochon cut and the other two, exclusive to the Greater China area, with blue topaz and a fancy cabochon-cut amethyst, all wrapped in a sparkling diamond pavé frame.

Much more than a simple goldsmith technique, Tubogas is a distinctive mark of the Bulgari style, which has demonstrated its ability to blend in ever-new ways with the other aesthetic codes of the Roman Maison.
Its everlasting charm continues to stand the test of time, and this is just the beginning.
